Frequently asked questions
What is dutching?
Backing several runners in the same race (or outcomes in the same market) and splitting your stake so you get the same return whichever of them wins.
How is the dutching stake worked out?
Each runner gets a share of the total in proportion to 1 / its odds. Stake = total x (1 / odds) / the sum of 1 / odds for every runner you back.
What does the implied probability total mean?
Under 100% means the runners you picked return a profit if any of them wins. Over 100% means you lose a little whichever wins. It never covers runners you left out.
What if none of my runners win?
You lose the whole stake. Dutching only evens out the runners you back. Watch for late scratchings, which can change the field and the bookmaker's terms.
When do matched bettors dutch instead of laying?
When the Betfair market is too thin to match a lay, or a promotion is easier to cover across several runners at the bookmaker. No exchange liability is tied up.
Does Betfair commission apply to dutching?
Only if you dutch on Betfair. Commission comes off your net win in that market: 8% on most Australian racing. Bookmaker bets carry no commission.
